Medical Science. Does one hand know what the other is doing? Aspirin and PPI drugs - the implication for patients.

Medical science is a wonderful thing, we are told. It provides us with the evidence base that underpins conventional medicine. It tells our doctors whether a drug or vaccine is effective. It informs us when conventional medicine is unsafe for patients.

Or does it? Consider these two pieces of recent news, straight from medical science!

The first concerns aspirin, and has been covered by the mainstream media. For instance, the BBC headline, 14th June 2017, said:

"People over 75 taking daily aspirin after a stroke or heart attack are at higher risk of major - and sometimes fatal - stomach bleeds than previously thought, research in the Lancet shows."

This seems clear enough, although you might ask why the mainstream media is carrying a 'bad news' story about pharmaceutical drugs. The reason is simple. Medical science has made it into a 'good news' story, and the media as usual has merely parroted the transformation. These are the BBC's next sentences,

"Scientists say that, to reduce these risks, older people should also take stomach-protecting PPI pills. But they insist aspirin has important benefits - such as preventing heart attacks - that outweigh the risks. And they warn that stopping aspirin suddenly can be harmful."

So that's alright again. If one drug is dangerous, take another one at the same time! And, as usual, the benefits outweigh the risks! And don't stop taking the drug, even if it is harmful, because stopping taking the harmful drug is also harmful. Okay? Does that all make sense? In essence we are being told:
  • Pharmaceutical drugs may be harmful, but another drug will reduce the harm it causes!
  • Pharmaceutical drugs may be harmful, but the benefits still outweigh the risks!
  • It may be harmful taking pharmaceutical drugs, but it is also harmful stopping taking them!
However, there is worse! Another piece of medical science has recently led to new guidance being given to our doctors. This advice concerns PPI (proton pump) drugs, widely used by millions of people for indigestion, acid reflux, and other stomach complaints. And, of course, for people taking their daily aspirin! You may not have heard about this new advice on the mainstream media, the reason being simple, it constitutes 'bad' news, and as yet there has been no attempt to spin it into something good! You can read it here, in the doctors e-magazine, Pulse (4th July 2017), in an article entitled "GPs should ‘limit use and duration’ of PPIs". This is what it says,

"Prescribers should be more vigilant about only prescribing PPIs when necessary as they are associated with increased risk of death, according to a new study. The observational study found that there was a heightened risk of death in patients taking PPIs compared to patients taking other drugs that reduce the amount of stomach acid produced, such as H2 blockers, leading researchers to suggest that doctors should be more selective about who they prescribe the drugs to."

So, thanks to medical science, the picture now seems much clearer (sic), and it goes something like this.
  • Patients are asked by their doctors to take aspirin in order to avoid a stroke or heart attack.
  • Unfortunately, aspirin may cause fatal heart bleeds.
  • So to protect again these fatal heart bleeds, we are told to keep taking the aspirin, but in addition to take PPI drugs too!
  • However, PPI drugs also heightens the risk of death!
So what will our doctors do? Are they conflicted? Are they confused? Well, they have certainly been warned by medical science!

"The findings in our study highlight a potential excess risk of death among users of PPI, and in particular among cohort participants without gastrointestinal comorbidities, and that risk is increased with prolonged duration of PPI exposure."

Yet once again a 'scientific' study that has linked a pharmaceutical drug to patient harm comes with a warning that the patient should not stop taking the harmful drug.

"Although our results should not deter prescription and use of PPI where medically indicated, they may be used to encourage and promote pharmacovigilance and emphasise the need to exercise judicious use of PPI and limit use and duration of therapy to instances where there is a clear medical indication and where benefit outweighs potential risk."

So now, older people over 75 years of age are taking two drugs, both of them dangerous, all in order to prevent them having a stroke or heart attack. So perhaps there is a third drug available, to counteract the dangers caused by PPI drugs? Watch this space! I will tell you about it as soon as I hear!

Yet surely it is good that our doctors now know that there is an inconsistency here. The Pulse article points out the inconsistencies of what are doctors are being asked to do,

"The findings come as research published in June suggested that GPs should be co-prescribing PPIs in patients taking daily aspirin to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal bleeds in the elderly."

Pulse does not suggest a solution, and the GP comments at the foot of the Pulse article indicates that they are as conflicted and confused about the situation as medical science. "So many confounders here", says one. Another is more dismissive, "people who drink fluids and eat solids have a risk of death". Another goes further, "everything has a risk. Let us not eat, breath or walk, one might get cancer, from food and PM2.5 particles, or one might slip and fall". One might, indeed! But eating, drinking and breathing is not a voluntary action, like taking a dangerous drug! Another doctor appears more phlegmatic, "I would have thought this would be good news? Cut polypharmcy, cut expense, cut workload, cut risk.... why are we moaning?" And yet another doctor believes that if patients had to pay for their drugs the situation would be different.

"Any Drug prescribed will be taken only when necessary ONLY WHEN PATIENTS PAY FOR IT. When everybody is charged for medications, patient will ask doctors DO I REALLY HAVE TO TAKE IT? IS IT A MUST? At current rate of 89 % public not paying for medications, no matter of how much we telling people will work."

So even doctors are telling us we should not be taking the drugs! But doctors continue to prescribe them. Perhaps it might help if the mainstream media, and the conventional medical establishment, including our doctors, began to tell patients about the real harm done by the drugs and vaccines, we would all be better able to make an informed choice!

Aspirin causes gastrointestinal bleeding, so the solution is to take PPI drugs which cause .... and so it goes on!

Medical Research scientists at Oxford University have studied over 3,000 patients over 75 years taking anti-platelet drugs, notably aspirin, over a 10-year period. More than 300, that is, 10%, were taken to hospital for gastrointestinal bleeding. They concluded that the overall risk of developing serious bleeding was 10 times higher, which they concluded was "at least as likely to be disabling or fatal" as another stroke. The research was published in the Lancet yesterday, 13th June 2017, "Age-specific risks, severity, time course, and outcome of bleeding on long-term antiplatelet treatment after vascular events: a population-based cohort study".

The research estimated that between 40–66% of adults aged 75 years or older in the USA and Europe take daily aspirin, or another anti platelet drug. Aspirin is known to increase the risk of major gastrointestinal bleeding. Indeed conventional medicine has known this for decades, and this is not the first time medical science has proved it! So what is new? Nothing really. This research proves that aspirin causes more bleeding in more older people than was previously thought!

What this demonstrates is that it takes the conventional medical establishment a long time to work out the damage caused by pharmaceutical drugs! Aspirin was first patented as a drug in 1889, nearly 130 years ago, so it might have been hoped, even expected, that by now they might by now realise the full extent of the damage it is causing to patients. Clearly they do not!

It is proof, if proof is really needed, that conventional medicine is happy to provide patients with dangerous drugs, for a century and more, without fully realising just how dangerous they are to human health!

Worse is the conclusion that the researchers drew from this new evidence. Aspirin may be dangerous, but the solution is not to stop taking it, but to take another pharmaceutical drug instead, PPI's or Proton Pump Inhibitor drugs. So are these drugs safe? Of course not. As my 'Why Homeopathy?' webpage outlines, PPI's are known to cause a host of serious problems - the superbug C.Diff, Pneumonia, Osteoporosis, Heart Attacks, Kidney damage, and dementia. And, of course, all these diseases are suffered particularly by older people!

So, out of the frying pan into the fire? Well, not really. Patients take them together. So they are both in the frying pan and the fire!

It must also be remembered that conventional medicine has been using Aspirin and PPI's together for many years. It is not new advice.  This is how the doctor's e-magazine, Pulse, puts it.

"Current NICE guidance on NSAID prescribing already recommends co-prescription of PPIs in patients at increased risk of adverse GI effects, which includes those aged 65 or above. Despite this, such treatment is not routine and among the study participants just one third of patients were prescribed a PPI. Experts are now calling for guidance to be updated so that patients aged 75 or above on long-term anti-platelet therapy are routinely co-prescribed a PPI."

So this is another piece of medical science that clearly demonstrates harm but does absolutely nothing about it. Yet there is a further problem. If patients taking Aspirin need to take another drug to stop gastrointestinal bleeding, do they also need to take further drugs to prevent its other known side effects? This is not mentioned! But Aspirin is known to cause a whole host of other serious side effects. My blog "Aspirin. That nice, harmless painkiller, outlines the following information:

  • Although used to prevent heart attacks and strokes Aspirin is known that aspirin actually doubles the risk.
  • Aspirin is known to cause a variety of eyesight problems, from macular degeneration to blindness.
  • Although aspirin is sometimes used to prevent cancer, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that it is actually linked to "a significantly increased risk of developing cancer".
  • And one study, undertaken at the University of Florida and reported in the magazine WDDTY (What Doctor's Don't Tell You), showed that patients taking regular doses of aspirin increased their risk of dying by 47%.

So do patients need to guard against these side effects? There is silence on this! And so the conventional medical circus rolls on, apparently learning lots, but understanding little. Conventional medicine is a game of pretence - pretending to care about whether pharmaceutical drugs cause harm to patients, but when they discover that they do, doing little or nothing about it. The charade just carries on.

  • "The drugs do more good than harm!" - but with precious little evidence of what good they actually do.
  • "All medical treatment has side effects!" - a nonsense statement for anyone who knows about homeopathy, acupuncture and most every other forms of traditional or alternative medicine.

Aspirin and the Media (BBC News)

Once again this morning (6th August 2014) I awoke to more ‘good news’ from the conventional medical establishment, forwarded by their most trusted supporter - BBC News! We were all told that another study (no doubt funded by Big Pharma) has shown that regular Aspirin was good for our health!

This blog has regularly reported on the Media’s failure to inform the public (their readers, listeners, viewers) of the dangers of pharmaceutical drugs. Yet whilst most media is dependent on advertising revenues (of which Big Pharma, and related industries are a major source), and so unlikely to ‘bite the hand’ of their main supporter), the BBC is a public broadcaster, funded by the licence payers. It should not be beholden to the drug companies in the way it seems to be. It should be able to provide us with news that does not focus on ‘good news’ and ignores ‘bad’ news.

BBC News should be providing the public with a balanced and unbiased view on health issues - but is routinely failing to do so.

The BBC does know that Aspirin is not the ‘wonder drug’ that it so often tells us it is. In the past they have published articles stating the problems associated with Aspirin, and indeed other painkillers.

Even as recently as June this year the BBC published this article.

Yet the BBC does not focus on these problems. And when they do discuss them they go to the only people they consider to be ‘experts’ - conventional medical practitioners - the people who are giving us pharmaceutical drugs and so cannot be expected to question their use, or their value.

Instead, the BBC parrots, usually without question, the ‘good news’ about Aspirin. This morning the feature did mention gasto-intestinal bleeding (but does not mention that this can cause death) - but this is not the only major problem that Aspirin, and other similar NSAID painkillers represent to our health.

If the BBC were aware, or if they were prepared to feature anything about conventional health which was not ‘good’ news, they might be discussing the major problem that painkilling drugs now present to the conventional medical establishment. Doctors are fully aware that they are rapidly losing their battle against pain, as all their painkillers are now deeply implicated in causing serious disease, dependency and death. Painkillers are known to be extremely harmful to our health. What is more, if the BBC is not aware of this, are doctors are! Our doctors are debating this very the problem amongst themselves, although not, of course, with patients!

But as with the failure of Antibiotic drugs, the failure of Painkilling drugs is not being debated my our media, and certainly not by the BBC!

Patients are being left in the dark. The government does not inform us because of Big Pharma investment in our economy. The NHS does not inform us because they are dominated by Big Pharma, and Big Pharma interests. Our doctors do not inform us because they would be castigated and probably struck off if they dared break ranks.

Our mainstream media does not tell us because they are dependent on their advertisers.

BBC News does not tell us because ………??

NHS Overspend - again!

The mainstream media is reporting yet another NHS overspend this morning (18th June 2014).

Of course, this is not new news - such overspends have been a regular feature of NHS health news for the last 60+ years and more. The usual reasons given (including by the BBC Today programme) is that the NHS is underfunded (currently the spending freeze is highlighted), and there is an ageing population. Yet the BBC Today programme featured two other health-related features.

These news features were not linked by the BBC, of course, although there is a very clear link, as I have pointed out, in considerable detail, in my e-book, "The Failure of Conventional Medicine" (click here to read this). Conventional, drug-based medicine has always been expensive. Some drugs can cost £30,000 per annum per patient, and a few much more than this.

Yet whilst the cost of conventional drugs is an issue it is NOT the fundamental reason the NHS is constantly found to be overspending. Indeed, the reason for NHS overspends are contained within the BBC's own reports today on Aspirin, and on Crohn's disease.

The NICE guidance on aspirin overturns conventional medical practice that has been in place for decades. What does this mean? It means that the NHS has now recognised that people have been taking a drug is not very effective.

"Aspirin has been used for years to help protect patients from strokes, but mounting evidence suggests the drug's benefits are too small compared with other treatments".

Yet the main problem with aspirin is not just that it is ineffective. There is a growing recognition that aspirin is positively dangerous to our health, especially when taken on a long-term basis. This, of course, was not mentioned by NICE, or by the BBC, but it could well be the primary reason for the change in advice.

In terms of cost, this means is that the NHS has been using a largely ineffectual (and harmful) drug on the basis that it was doing us some good. This is not a one-off situation. It has been repeated regularly over the years - we are given a drug because it is supposed to be effective, only later for us to be told it is not effective!

We are, however, not usually told that the drug we have taken for years is also dangerous.

However, this is not the case with the BBC's feature on Crohn's disease. The cause of this particular epidemic was actually mentioned. Antibiotic drugs. And particularly antibiotics given to young children. The dangers of antibiotics drugs have rarely been discussed by the mainstream media. The conventional medical establishment have, said for over 60 years, that these drugs were "very safe", and it has been on this understanding that most parents have allowed their children to take them over the years.

The admission that Antibiotic drugs meddle with our gut flora, disrupt our digestive system, and can ultimately cause Crohn's disease, was mentioned in this BBC feature - but the issue was not pursued. The mainstream media, including the BBC, has rarely, if ever, discussed the issues of medical drugs causing such epidemics of chronic disease. There are many examples of this but they appear to be 'no-go' areas for our media!

So what are we facing in this situation? What are we missing? Basically, we are missing a vicious circulatory in the way we are delivering health services to sick people, and the outcomes.
  • Start with an overspending NHS......
  • Then consider the use of drugs, over decades, that are eventually found to be ineffective (and also harmful to our health).....
  • Then consider the epidemics of chronic diseases, like Crohn's, often new diseases, caused by conventional drug treatment, which add to the levels of illness the NHS is having to cope with.....
  • Then consider the additional demands this places on NHS services......
  • And then ask the question - why does the NHS overspend its huge budget......
I wonder when the Media is going to be allowed to do some 'joined-up' thinking on the issue of health, and the domination of conventional drugs within the NHS?

Aspirin. That nice, harmless painkiller?

I wrote about Aspirin in my e-book, "The Failure of Conventional Medicine", in which I outlined why, after spending so much on health care during the last 60+ years we seem to be getting sicker rather than better. In this piece I wrote the following:

".... like all NSAID drugs, aspirin is associated with side-effects such as stomach ulcers, disruption of the blood clotting system, and asthma attacks in susceptible people. And aspirin is far more dangerous than we have been told. A WDDTY report dated 18th October 2007 claims that aspirin kills 20,000 people in the USA every year, whilst another 100,000 end up in hospital as a result of taking the drug".

Since writing this, I have to admit that I seem to have got things very wrong! Aspirin is now known to be much more dangerous than I realised at the time. The dangers of Aspirin go far beyond the Gastro-Intestinal diseases it causes.

Aspirin was first patented as a drug in 1889, so in over 120 years, the conventional medical establishment appears to have been quite unaware of the dangers of Aspirin, or quite unprepared to tell us about them, although at the same time quite prepared to tell us that aspirin was 'safe', and could be taken routinely for any number of health reasons.

In August 2011, the magazine WDDTY (What doctor's don't tell you) reported that although Aspirin is supposed to prevent heart disease (and many millions of patients are taking a daily aspirin to do so, on the advice of their doctors), all NSAID drugs, including aspirin, actually become a killer for patients who already have a heart condition. The article reported on research done at the University of Florida, published in the American Journal of Medicine, which showed that patients taking aspirin regularly increased their risk of dying by 47%.

Research in Australia has linked Aspirin with age-related macular degeneration. Perhaps this is not surprising, given the number of older people who have been encouraged to take aspirin, routinely, over recent decades. But note that the researchers could not quite bring themselves to prove a 'causal' relationship! This probably means two things. First, patients won't be told until a 'causal relationship' has been completely demonstrated. And in the meantime, doctors will continue to give it to us despite the risks!

Note that doctors in the UK have already been told about the doubling of the risk of contracting the condition, but that their advice is to continue prescribing it:

" ...'any decision to stop aspirin therapy is complex and should be individualised', noting that the risk 'should be balanced with the significant morbidity and mortality of sub-optimally treated cardiovascular disease'. Overall they felt there was insufficient evidence to recommend changing practice, except in patients with strong risk factors for neovascular age-related macular degeneration".

So all is well within the world of the conventional medical establishment! Carry on, they say, despite the risk.

So do our doctors tell us about the risk? Well, at least WDDTY have done so. In their report on research done at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, they say that the risk increases the longer patients take aspirin, and that "those who have taken the drug regularly for 10 years or longer are at the highest risk" emphasising the the drug can cause many kinds of eye problems, up to, and including, blindness.

See also the following articles on Aspirin, Eyesight and Blindness.
Taking aspirin regularly causes severe degenerative eye disorders
Taking aspirin as few times as once a week triples risk of blindness

So what about all the evidence that suggest aspirin does such wonderful things for our health? For example, does it not reduce cancer risk? WDDTY have again suggested that this is another piece of ConMed hype. It reports on an article published in The Lancet that examined the evidence of aspirin's 'cancer-protecting' role, which found that the study was a re-analysis of about 90 previously published studies - which conveniently managed to exclude several major US trials that had failed to find "any protective effect from aspirin".

The situation is actually worse than this, as described in this article which indicates that not only will aspirin not prevent cancer, it will actually cause it. The author reminds us that the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, in 2004, found that daily aspirin intake "is linked to a significantly increased risk of developing cancer". Indeed, the article goes on to remind us of the overall dangers of aspirin, namely:

"Regular use of aspirin is linked to heart attack, stroke, intestinal bleeding, organ damage, and death".

The conclusion that can be reached is that the ConMed Establishment is willing to discount, or to ignore, the overwhelming evidence that aspirin consumption is dangerous; and that it is able, and willing to use and manipulate 'medical science' in order to highlight any marginal, or indeed bogus benefits that can be found in drugs.

We are dealing with Big Business interests here, not in a health service that puts patient interests first and foremost.

Similar claims have been made for Aspirin in relation to it preventative role in treating Dementia. 'The Healthier Life' have examined these claims, and came to this conclusion:

"In a new study, research gave memory tests to hundreds of older subject with high risk of heart disease. Five years later, they gave the same tests. Subject who took low-dose aspirin tended to score a bit hight than those who didn't use the therapy. Okay. Slightly better memory. That's good. But even the researchers admit ... "There were no differences in dementia rates in the two groups".

So this is not a ringing endorsement of aspirin as an effective treatment of dementia. But any marginally positive news is used by the ConMed Establishment to hype its drugs. So despite the risks to our hearts, our eyes, and our stomachs, older people are given a drug in the hope that it might, just, have a marginal effect on our brains.

Great marketing. Lousy medicine!

Aspirin is a NSAID painkiller. In the next few days I will be continuing with a series of blog on painkillers that implicates these drugs with far wider damage to human health.

Common Pain Killing drugs lead to Heart problems

It is interesting to compare what the Conventional Medical Establishment tells us about pharmaceutical drugs, and what they refuse to tell us. The Health Sciences Institute has done just this in a recent newsletter (to receive their newsletter, well worthwhile, go to their website at http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/.

"Higher daily dose of aspirin could play key role in preventing heart attacks for those with diabetes."

That is the kind of 'good' news we so often hear from the NHS, which is so readily peddled in the mainstream media.

Higher daily dose of aspirin could play key role in preventing heart attacks for those with diabetes" University of Alberta press release, 7/5/11, eurekalert.org

What you won't hear is any 'news' to the contrary. For instance, this research will almost certainly not be taken up by GPs, the NHS, or the mainstream media.

"Common Painkillers May Increase Risk of Irregular Heart Rhythm" MyHealthNewsDaily, 7/5/11, myhealthnewsdaily.com

The drugs implicated in this research is not just aspirin, but that whole group of commonly available painkillers called NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

"... Danish researchers compared medical records for about 32,000 atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with medical records for more than 320,000 healthy subjects. Results showed that 60 days or more of NSAID use increased AF risk by 40 per cent, and the same amount of COX-2 inhibitor use increased risk by 70 per cent.

AF is associated with the long-term risk of stroke and heart failure - and therefore death. But there are more well-known risk with taking NSAIDs - stomach bleeding - which the American Gastroenterological Association says results in more than 100,000 admissions to hospital each year (and I believe that figure in just the USA).

Nonsteriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)" American Gastroenterological Association, 4/24/10, gastro.org

There are no safe pharmaceutical drugs. The best thing anyone can do is to avoid them - and look for a safer medical therapy.

Common painkillers triple risk of stroke

The British Medical Journal has published evidence that common painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen double the risk of a heart attack, and triple the chance of stroke. The researchers were alerted to the potential dangers of anti-inflammatory painkillers following the withdrawal of Vioxx (rofecoxib) after it was found to cause heart disease and death.

Vioxx was a COX-2 inhibitor, a ‘new generation’ anti-inflammatory supposedly safer than the older NSAIDs (non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs), such as aspirin.  But the researchers found that the risk exists across the entire family of drugs when they analysed the results of 31 drug trials, involving 116,429 participants.

The researchers conclude that the drugs – many of which can be purchased without a prescription in pharmacies – are not safe, and should be taken with great care.

Aspirin - a Miracle Drug?

Certainly the mainstream media wants us to believe that Aspirin is a miracle drug; but do they tell us the truth? The Guardian, for instance, was quick to broadcast the news that Aspirin, "the world's humble true wonder drug"(http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/dec/12/aspirin-cancer-wonder-drug-lancet) has been shown by researchers to offer real defence against many forms of cancer.

Yet as What Doctors Don't Tell You (WDDTY) pointed out, the same Oxford University professor, who made these headlines in most mainstream media, was the same person who 3 years ago discovered that Aspirin was a major cause of stroke in older people.
http://www.wddty.com/aspirin-reduces-cancer-risk-but-raises-chances-of-stroke-says-same-researcher.html

Nor did the mainstream media tell us what he said about the study:

"We can't say with absolute certainty that there won't be some unknown harm in taking aspirin for 30 years ... people have to accept there's some uncertainty here".

Uncertainty? He demonstrated that aspirin caused a 7-fold increase in stroke over the past 25 years among elderly patients; and is on record as warning that aspirin could soon replace high blood pressure as the leading cause of stroke with the over-75's.

And as WDDTY point out, a study from Eastern Virginia Medical School discovered the drug is killing 20,000 Americans every year from gastrointestinal bleedings - when official records put the figure at just 59.

We need publications like WDDTY. They remind us, constantly, that we are not being told the truth about drugs and health, not just by doctors, or Big Pharma, or the NHS, or the government - but by our mainstream media.

Aspirin, Crohn's Disease, and Homeopathy

My mother used to tell me that you could take as many aspirin as you wanted, it did you no harm! How wrong could she be? And of course, most people believe that such common ConMed drugs are safe, even if some of the more exotic drugs are not.

Many people regularly take an aspirin a day to ward off heart problems. But it has now been found that by doing so they are greatly increasing their chances of developing Crohn’s disease. So a simple pain killer can cause a debilitating gut problem!

Of course, this is the disease-inducing effect (DIEs) of ConMed drugs in action. Researchers at the University of East Anglia have discovered that people increase their chances of developing Crohn’s 5-fold if they take an aspirin a day for more than a year after tracking 200,000 healthy volunteers in Europe. Crohn’s Disease causes inflammation and swelling in the digestive system, and under ConMed requires lifelong medication, with surgery in more serious cases. Some sufferers go on to contract bowel cancer.

Crohn's Disease is eminently treatable with homeopathy, and anyone who wishes to treat the condition with homeopathy should consult a qualified, registered homeopath
(see www.a-r-h.org/FindMembers/find).
