Sports Injuries and Homeopathy

All sports people push their bodies hard. Whatever their sport they usually strain every muscle and ligament to produce maximum performance. So after competing every athlete's body can ache and requires time to recover. In many sports there is also heavy bodily contact that can cause bruising, concussion, fractures and other injuries.

So sport injury is common, and any injured sports person want to recover as soon as possible, and get back into competition, particularly if sport is his or her livelihood. Homeopathy helps the body to cope with the stresses and strains of sporting performance, and deal with sport injury. Indeed, the use of homeopathy in sport has at least three major benefits:
  1. No homeopathic remedies are illegal as they do not ‘enhance' performance. What this means is that sports people do not have to live in fear of drug testing, they do not have to worry about inadvertently using banned and illegal 'performance enhancing' drugs. Remedies are not an issue for drug testing, they are a safe and legitimate way to soothe the aches and pains of sporting performance, and shorten recovery time from injury.
  2. No homeopathic remedies are harmful. Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted micro-doses of the substance that stimulates the body’s own healing response. They do not have side effects. What this means is that the body does not have to expend energy in coping with, and eliminating the toxicity of pharmaceutical drugs, or to overcome the harmful, and sometimes dangerous side effects they are known to cause. They are also entirely safe for children and young people.
  3. Yet the most important benefit is that homeopathy works effectively, and can actually speed up recovery, including recovery from injury. Conventional medicine has no drug that can speed, or enhance recovery from injury. Indeed, conventional doctors do not even claim to have drugs that have any such effect! Instead, conventional medicine offers painkillers to help 'play through the pain' but this is also dangerous. Pain is a message to the body that something is wrong, that further exertion is not a sensible option. Hiding pain with pharmaceutical drugs can, and often does, lead to further, more serious injury. Also, painkilling drugs, even the most popular painkillers, also have the most extremely serious side effects.
So what does homeopathy offer to the sports person, especially at the time of injury, when the desire to get back into action is intense?

Injury trauma, and bruising.
Arnica Montana is the most amazing remedy. Arnica cream can also soothe sore muscles both before and after a workout. It is the first remedy called for after an injury, and thereafter in the treatment of most sports injuries. It deals with the immediate shock of the incident that has caused the injury, both at a mental and physical level. It can bring out and relieve bruising, swelling, and pain. It can speed recovery from muscle soreness after performance, and also from minor injuries. Homeopathy, in other words, offers a natural alternative treatment that can help your body heal instead of just covering up the pain.

Indeed, Arnica can relieve the discomfort of sore muscles far better than painkillers like ibuprofen, which are known to damage the gastrointestinal tract, and the kidneys, and increase the risk of high blood pressure. Conventional painkillers are often used to mask pain symptoms, so running the risk of more serious injury by over-using damaged muscles, tendons and cartilage.

Bellis Perennis is a remedy, particularly for 'deeper' bruising, perhaps resulting from a direct blow to the muscles, as in a 'dead leg'. sport. When this remedy is required there is often a feeling of 'tightness' and bruising may not be initially so apparent.

If, immediately after getting a minor injury, a homeopathic remedy is taken it can get the athlete back in action there and then. Yet homeopathy can also speed recovery from the most serious sports injuries. Indeed, healing is dramatically faster when using homeopathic. In his article “Homeopathy and Sports Medicine” published in American Homeopathy, as long ago as June 1984, A. Dwight Smith, MD, estimated that homeopathy can cut healing time for sports injuries by 50-85%.

Muscle and ligament strain
Strain injuries are common in sports that require the application of enormous or consistent force to the limbs, ligaments, and muscles that attach to the bones and joints. Strains occur when continual force or twisting movements are made, or when there is an awkward movement that pulls the joints in a way that is not expected or normal.

Ruta Graveolens is perhaps the most common and important remedy for this type of injury. It has traditionally been used for the relief of painful stiffness, especially around joints, and overstraining and sprains of the shoulders, wrists, knees. Tennis elbow is an example. Ruta is oven indicated when tight bandaging feels helpful, and when movement is not helpful, but the pain is worse after lying or sitting.

Ledum is another remedy useful in treating sprained joints, especially when the joint is heavily bruised, and there is a sensation of being cold, but which is made worse by applying heat, but better by applying ice. It is also good for black eyes.

Symphytum is a remedy made from Comfrey, the herb, one of whose medieval names was 'bone-knit'. And this is exactly what Symphytum does. If taken shortly after the bone has been reset, and is then taken regularly, it has been found to reduce the 'knitting' process by as much as one-third. So a six-week wait can be reduced to four-weeks. This website provides more details, and other remedies that can be used after a fracture.

The seriousness of concussion is becoming more widely recognised in most contact sports today. There are many remedies that will help speed recovery, both immediately after a blow to the head, and afterwards.

Aconite is often used if there is acute fear following a head injury.

Arnica is again the first, and most important remedy for concussion. It is particularly useful when there is bruising and swelling. The face might be hot, but the rest of the body is cold. When the individual is conscious, they may insist that they are "Okay" when they are clearly not, even to the extent of refusing to be examined. They may be sleepy, or drifting in and out of stupor. If asked a question they may answer correctly, but then go back to sleep.

Natrum sulphuricum is often used to treat the after-effects of concussion. The patient will often show symptoms of post-traumatic brain damage, such as cognitive thinking, concentration, memory changes, dizziness, convulsions, tinnitus. An important indication for this remedy is usual personality changes, with the individual showing signs of unusual irritability, confusion, and depression - even suicidal thoughts.

Opium, in homeopathic potency, is used when there is stupor or coma following a head injury, when the pupils are constricted, the face is bloated and flushed, and normal reflexes are almost absent. There may also be rattling breathing, or snoring. The pupils are constricted and the face is bloated and flushed. Reflexes may be almost absent.

The Use of Homeopathy in Sports Injuries
Some big sport teams are now recognising the important role that homeopathy can play in the treatment of sports injury. The usual example given is the frequent and widespread use of homeopathy by German football teams. One study showed that most doctors working for football teams in the top two German football leagues (Bundesliga 1 and 2) use homeopathic remedies to keep their players healthy and fit, as does the German national football team.

The Administration of Remedies
Another advantage of using homeopathic remedies to treat sporting injuries is that it can be quickly and efficiently administered during a game, either by popping a remedy in the mouth, or by taking the remedy by water.

The only question is why more sports people are not taking advantage of the safe, effective and inexpensive medical therapy.

There are many more important homeopathic remedies that can be used in sports injuries, only the main ones have been mentioned here. Anyone who wishes to know more about the treatment of sports injuries with homeopathy should consult these two important books.

Bisphosphonates and Osteoporosis. The drug actually assists bone fractures!

  1. Bisphosphonate drugs are used to treat Osteoporosis.
  2. Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break, even given a minor fall.
  3. Bisphosphonate drugs cause tiny cracks within the bone that can make bone fractures more likely.
Three simple but amazing facts. A patient has Osteoporosis, so conventional medicine gives him/her a drug that increases the risk of bone fracture!

What kind of medicine is this? Yet the seriousness of the issue does not stop here, it is actually far, far worse than this.

History
Bisphosphonates were developed in the 19th century. They have been investigated for disorders in bone metabolism since the 1960's. They have become widely prescribed. In Britain alone it is estimated that 3 million people, mainly women, are taking them.

Yet only today (1st March 2017) do we here about the 'tiny cracks' that these drugs cause, only today does BBC News (and other mainstream news media) deign to inform patients that the drugs they have been taking for over 50 years to avoid fracturing bones actually makes the situation worse.

Medical Science
What have medical scientists been doing for the last 50 years? They are supposed to be protecting patients from dangerous drugs. There was no mention of this possible side effect when the drug was introduced. Even Wikipedia say this today.

"They are the most commonly prescribed drugs used to treat osteoporosis. Evidence shows that they reduce the risk of fracture in post-menopausal women with osteoporosis." (my emphasis).

No warning there, then! Lots of people take these drug; and the evidence shows they reduce the risk of fracture. The drugs are widely used, so plenty of evidence of use; and they are effective. They have been effective for over 50 years - until today?

What are these drugs?
Perhaps not many people have heard of Bisphosphonates. When there is a problem with a drug the pharmaceutical industry is adept at covering up. They change the name by which the drug is referred to - generic name, brand names, any names to confuse the patient!

So mention Fosamax (alendronate/cholecalciferol), Didronel (etidronate), Zometa (zoledronic acid),
Reclast (zoledronic acid), Boniva (ibandronate), Aclasta (zoledronic acid), Atelvia (risedronate), Actonel (risedronate, Actonel with Calcium (calcium carbonate/risedronate), Aredia (pamidronate), Binosto (alendronate), Skelid (tiludronate), and no doubt many more different names in different countries, and some people may have heard about them before. But more likely patients are confused by the profusion of names, and of course we are supposed to be. Drug companies don't want to be asked too many awkward questions.

Fosamax
Fosamax is not a name to be mentioned now in conventional medical circles! It has a long list of very serious side effects. These include the following, taken from the Drugs.com website (but read only if you wish to be scared!)

Abdominal or stomach pain, cramps, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, oesophagus pain, skin rash, blistering, peeling, or loosening of skin, bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet, bone, joint, or muscle pain, severe, occasionally incapacitating, chest pain, confusion, convulsions, cough, diarrhoea, difficulty breathing, difficulty moving, heavy jaw feeling, hives or welts, irregular heartbeat, loosening of teeth, numbness and tingling around the mouth, fingertips, or feet, pain or burning in the throat, rapid weight gain, red skin lesions, often with a purple centre, red, irritated eyes, redness of the skin, shortness of breath, sore throat, sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or tongue or inside the mouth, swollen joints, tremor, unusual tiredness or weakness, vomiting, constipation, blurred vision or other change in vision, dizziness or lightheadedness, eye pain, feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings, general feeling of discomfort or illness, hair loss or thinning of the hair, sensitivity of the eye to light.....

Indeed, the dangers of Fosamax have been known for a long time. I have references to articles going back to 2003! Merck, the manufacturer faced a large number of lawsuits in and around 2005-2006 because it was known to cause severe jaw decay, known as 'Fosi-Jaw'. This is a Mail Online headline from September 2015.

Better, then, to call these drugs 'biphosphonates', in case patients remember that this is not a new problem, it is a very old problem!

The Precautionary Principle
This principle is used in most industries. I have written about it before, "The Precautionary Principle in Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Drug Regulation". So if there is a problem, even a potential problem with a product, be cautious, take the safest option available. Withdraw the product, don't use the product, replace the product. The only industry that does not use it, and is not expected to use it, is the pharmaceutical industry, supported by the entire conventional medical establishment, and the mainstream media!

The 'experts' BBC News spoke to this morning said that whilst the 'new' evidence was a matter for concern, patients should not stop taking their bisphoshonate drugs. Perhaps they might like to speak to their doctors, sometime soon, but there was nothing to worry about!

This 'expert' used by the BBC is, of course, someone who has been responsible for prescribing these drugs, probably for much of the 50 plus years they are been available.

Well, then, he would say that, wouldn't he! What doctor wants to admit that he has treated a bone condition that worsens the bone condition!

Just a one-off problem
Actually, the situation with bisphosphonate drugs is not unusual. Whilst the BBC presented it quite casually (not a serious issue for patients), and a one-off blip, it is, of course, no such thing. Most drug reach the market, make the drug company £ billions, and only then are found to be dangerous. It has happened with antibiotics, statins, painkillers, antidepressants, and most other type of pharmaceutical drugs.

A failing medical system
This is a small news item, yet it is a huge news item. It is a tiny part of a huge failure. Conventional doctors are bemoaning the fact that there is growing resistance to antibiotics, that all painkillers are now really too dangerous to prescribe, that statins are not the 'entirely safe' drug they have told us about for decades. Now, doctors have another problem. They have no drug they can safely use to treat Osteoporosis.

Yet doctors will continue prescribing biphosphonate drugs because they have nothing else to offer. As I have said in another recent blog, "Doctors and dangerous drugs. Is their medicine cupboard bare?", they have nothing else to offer us.

Which is why we should all be declining conventional medical treatment! It is just too ineffective, just too dangerous. In fact, it is making us sicker.

Sports Injury? Get back into action quicker with Homeopathy.

Fitness is vitally important to any sportsmen, especially when their reputation, their living, their career depend upon it. So the consequences of sports injuries can be far reaching.

  • It can mean loss of earnings and bonuses.
  • It can mean that competitors are given an opportunity to replace them.
  • It can also be deeply frustrating waiting for recovery.

From aches and pains, to overuse-injuries, to severe bruising, to cuts, lacerations and wound healing, to strains and sprains, to muscle and tendon injuries, to joint injuries, to stress and bone fractures - all can mean a considerable absence for extended periods from sporting participation.

So any winning individuals or team know how important it is to keep fit and injury free: and when injury does happen, to get better and back in action, as soon as possible.

Most people and most teams place their trust in conventional medical treatment. But an increasing number are now looking to alternative medical therapies, and in particular Homeopathy, to aid quicker, more effective recovery from injury.

David Beckham fractured a metatarsal bone in his foot a few weeks prior to the World Cup in 2002. He was widely expected to miss the competition, but he used Homeopathy to improve and speed his recovery, and he played in the competition.

Many other sports people are reputed to have used Homeopathy, including Martina Navratilova, Boris Beckham, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nancy Lopez, Will Greenwood, Hermann Maier, Chris Bonnington. No doubt many, many more sports people can confirm this kind kind of success story.

All these people have used Homeopathy because they have found that recovery from injury is much quicker. Often it can reduce conventional recovery time by up to one-third of what conventional medicine considers to be ‘normal’.

But besides speed of recovery, there are other equally important advantages to homeopathic treatment.
  • Homeopathic remedies do not have harmful or dangerous side-effects or adverse reactions.
  • Homeopathic remedies are safe when considering issues of doping, or illegal substances.
So increasing numbers of sports people are turning to homeopathy, and their career is enhanced as a result.

Why Homeopathy for fractured bones?

When a bone is broken or cracked it is sensible to go directly to your local hospital (Accident and Emergency Department) to have the fracture confirmed, by X-Ray, the bone set, and the limb immobilised to keep it in position until it heals. Healing usually takes place in about 6 and 8 weeks.

Obviously, a broken bone can be very painful, and involve local swelling and tenderness, and for post trauma treatment it is important to compare conventional and homeopathic treatment.

Conventional Medical Treatment of Fractures
Pain and Swelling.
Conventional medical treatment of pain and swelling is by painkilling drugs. Whilst these may reduce the pain, the dangers of painkillers are becoming increasingly apparent, and certainly need to be considered before taking them.

Assisting the fracture to heal.
Conventional medicine allows the bone to heal normally, and without further assistance.

The Homeopathic Treatment of Fractures

Pain and Swelling.
Homeopathy offer the remedy Arnica, which will help treat the trauma of the fracture, any bruising or pain associated with it. For pain that persists, the remedy Bryonia can often be helpful.

Assisting the fracture to heal.
Homeopathy has useful remedies that can be used to assist and promote the healing process. Foremost amongst these is Symphytum, which in the experience of many homeopaths can reduce the healing period by anything up to one-third of the time expected.

These remedy descriptions have been taken from an article on fractures on the Homeopathy Plus website.

Arnica treats a wide range of conditions but is best known for controlling bleeding and speeding healing of damaged tissue. When broken bones have been caused by trauma, Arnica is the first remedy of choice in the first 24-48 hours. Following this, one of the following two remedies usually produce better results.

Bryonia. A symptom that will always be present when Bryonia is needed is that any complaint will worsen with the slightest movement and improve for being still. For this reason it is often needed during fractured ribs where pain is always associated with the motion of breathing. Sometimes, people needing Bryonia even prefer to sleep on the side of their fractured ribs so that they can’t move at all with breathing. Unfortunately, as discussed, lack of movement also leads to pneumonia. Bryonia can reduce the pain so the person can breathe more deeply.

Symphytum is used to ease the pain of broken bones and speed their repair. Reports are common of fractures healing within one to two thirds of the time normally expected. Its common name is Comfrey or ‘Knit-bone’ indicating its herbal fame for “knitting” broken bones together. Unfortunately, it is no longer prescribed in herbal doses as it can also be toxic to the liver but if used in homeopathic potencies, is free of this problem at all. are used.

Randomised Controlled Tests (RCTs)
RCTs are the third, and decidedly the least important type of evidence supporting Homeopathy as a medical therapy. But this study supports what Homeopaths have known within their clinics for over 200 years.

“Accelerating the healing of bone fracture using Homeopathy: a prospective, randomised double-blind controlled study”. International Research Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health 2012. Portland, Oregon, USA. 15-18 May 2012. S. Sharma, N Sharma, R Sharma.

Results. “Faster healing was reported in the homeopathy group by week 9 following injury, including significant improvement in fracture line, fracture edge, callous formation and fracture union in comparison to placebo.

“There was also lower use of analgesics and less self-reported pain in the homeopathy group.

Conclusion. “The study suggests that Homeopathy could enhance anatomical and functional fracture healing”.
