Dapagliflozin. Yet another pharmaceutical drug is banned

Another pharmaceutical drug has been effectively banned by the NHS

This happens on a regular basis; but banning a drug is now done with the minimum of fuss and publicity. The pharmaceutical medical establishment seems to think it is better for us patients not to know about it!

The drug is called Dapagliflozin, sold under the name of Forxiga, amongst many others. The headline is that it is "no longer indicated" for Type 1 Diabetes. What this meansis  that the drug was once "indicated" for use with diabetes patients.

"No longer indicated" is a lovely, neutral (meaningless?) phrase, so much nicer than "withdrawn", or "banned"! It means the same though - the drug has been used because it was previously considered to be effective and safe; but it is no longer considered to be either effective or safe.

This is not an unusual event. There has been a long history, stretching back many centuries, of hundreds of pharmaceutical drugs that have been banned, withdrawn, or are "no longer indicated".

All these drugs have caused significant patient harm. Yet all these drugs were initially approved for use with patients, deemed by medical science to be effective and safe. Dapagliflozin was approved in 2012 in Europe, and 2014 in the USA. So much for medical science!

"Dapagliflozin was found to be safe and well tolerated by healthy volunteers in double-blinded, placebo controlled ... studies".

So patients have been prescribed all these banned pharmaceutical drugs, often for decades, and patients have suffered damage as a direct consequence. So much for what is supposed to be the first principle of medical ethics - "First do no harm"!

"This Drugs.com webpage outlines the long list of side effects known to be caused by this drug - even though doctors were advised it was "well indicated", were prepared to prescribe it, and have caused their patients to suffer from anxiety, bladder pain, bloody or cloudy urine, blurred vision, chills, cold sweats, confusion, cool, pale skin, decreased frequency or amount of urine, depression, difficult, burning, or painful urination, dizziness, fast heartbeat, frequent urge to urinate, headache, increased hunger, increased thirst, itching of the vagina or genitals, loss of appetite, loss of consciousness, lower back or side pain, nausea, nightmares, seizures, shakiness, slurred speech, swelling of the face, fingers, or lower legs, thick, white vaginal discharge with mild or no odour, trouble breathing, unusual tiredness or weakness, vomiting, weight gain. And these are the "more common" side effects of the drug. Read the entire page. Doctors were actually warned that the drug was known to cause gangrene

No wonder, perhaps, that Dapagliflozin has been banned, however belatedly!

But banning a pharmaceutical drug is different now. There has been NO public announcement. NO admission of culpability. NO apology. Just an explicit instruction to doctors - its use has to be 'discontinued', with immediate effect. In other words, the drug is now known to be dangerous.

"It is recommended that use of dapagliflozin in patients with type I diabetes is reviewed and discontinued by or in consultation with a specialist and that this is done as soon as clinically practical. With the removal of the type I diabetes indication, the previously published risk minimisation materials for the drug will no longer be available."

This is what happens whenever anyone goes to see their doctor. They risk being prescribed drugs, described as safe, which are not safe; described as effective when they are not effective. And what this situation shows is that the drugs doctors are prescribing today are no safer, and no more effective, than the drugs they have prescribed to us in the past. You are NOT safe in your doctors hands.

So anyone who is currently taking pharmaceutical drugs or vaccines today should ask themselves - what guarantee do you have that these drugs are safe, and will not suffer the same fate as Dapagliflozin? And do you really want to continue risking drug damage?

MST Continus (morphone). Why has this drug been "discontinued"

The 'discontinuation' of this drug, MST Continus, has been announced by MIMS (March 2021). I suspect that MST Continus was 'discontinued' because it had to be banned. Discontinuation appears to be the new word that the pharmaceutical medical establishment uses because it sounds less dramatic, and less harmful to the reputation of the drugs industry. I have written about this recently about another drug, Phyllocontin (aminophylline).

So what is the basis for my suspicion? It is contained within the MIMS article, from which I have extracted these two statements.

  • "All strengths of MST Continus (morphine) prolonged-release granules for oral suspension are being discontinued because of difficulty sourcing a key excipient." (my emphasis).
  • "Healthcare professionals should not initiate MST Continus in new patients. Individuals currently prescribed MST Continus granules should be contacted for a treatment review." (my emphasis).

So which is it? If it is a difficulty sourcing a key ingredient that is one thing. But if the drug is safe and effective why have doctors been told not to use it, and to stop using it with patients already using it?

  • The first statement declares that the reason for 'discontinuation' concerns logistical issues.
  • The second clearly indicates that the drug has been banned, because for patients it is either ineffective, unsafe, or both.

If there should be any lingering doubt in your mind that MST Continus is not a dangerous drug you should read the (rather lengthy) Patient Information Leaflet that accompanies the drug, available here.

This drug has been withdrawn because it is yet another pharmaceutical drug that has seriously damaged the patients for which it has been prescribed for many years.

Are the Pharmaceutical Drugs your doctor is prescribing today any safer than the drugs that have already been banned because they were found to be dangerous to patient health?

Are the pharmaceutical drugs your doctor is prescribing today any safer than the drugs that have already been banned as they were a threat to patient safety? The second section of my ebook "The Failure of Conventional Medicine" seeks both to demonstrate and justify that title.

Today I have discovered that the doctors e-magazine, MIMS, publishes a regular list of pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines that have been recently 'deleted', many of them because they have been found to be harmful to patient health.

MIMS was established in 1963, and describes itself as "a multi-channel provider of drug information, medical education and services connecting healthcare communities". It says that it empowers healthcare professionals to "improve patient outcomes by facilitating knowledge exchange and better decision-making". It claims that it has a presence in 13 countries across the Asian Pacific, and has about two million healthcare professional subscribers to its drug and resource portal.

It is one of the 'bibles' used by conventional doctor, informing them about pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines - their uses, their contraindications, their side effects, and much else. So each year MIMS routinely chart and publish information about the drugs that have been deleted.

In 2017 MIMs listed 75 deleted drugs and vaccines! Each one is named, alongside the type of drug it is (or was). There was no indication about whether the drug was banned, withdrawn; they were just 'deleted' perhaps some of them replaced by another drug.

Already in 2018 (that is, first 9 months of the year) MIMS reports that further 96 drugs and vaccines have been deleted.

What this indicates is that the pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines doctors are prescribing to us today are no safer than the drugs they were giving us in previous years, and that they continue to cause the same kind of patient harm that led to the withdrawal, banning or deleting of so many old drugs.

Month by month pharmaceutical drugs are being deleted, and let's be clear, the one's that will be deleted next month, and next year, are the same drugs our doctors are prescribing today - to you and me.

What MIMS has demonstrated is that the pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines being prescribed today are all likely to be deleted tomorrow, next week, or next month, and that conventional medicine, and the pharmaceutical drugs that dominates it,  cannot be trusted with our health.

344 Pharmaceutical drugs combinations banned in India

The news has not filtered through to the western world (or should I say the news has been censored by the western media?) but India has recently banned 344 pharmaceutical drug combinations. It was reported in the Indian Express on 21st March 2016.

So India is not only looking to develop traditional methods of health care to deal with illness and disease, it already understands that pharmaceutical drugs are harmful to health, and action needs to be taken to protect our health.

The same does not apply to us in the western world. A quick look at the banned drugs and combinations would indicate that they are the same is being prescribed by conventional doctors in Europe, the Americas, Australasia, et al.

The significant difference is not that the drug are harming people in Indian, but not us. The difference is the control that conventional medicine, and in particular, the pharmaceutical industry, has over our governments, our politicians, the regulatory systems set up to protect patients, our national health services and our doctors, and our mainstream media. We are not supposed to know!

The drugs involved in these Indian bans are not unusual, they are ones millions of patients are taking, and which thousands of doctors will be prescribing this very day, and no doubt tomorrow too. And they will be prescribed to millions of patients who will not have been told about their dangers, and so will be quite unable to make an 'informed choice'.
  • NSAID painkillers
  • anti-allergy drugs
  • anti-diabetic drugs
  • anti-drugs for weight loss and obesity
  • gastro-intestinal drugs
  • and antibiotic drugs
When will we be told? Don't hold your breath!
